Whitsunday Islands

One of the big-ticket items on our two month road trip was sailing in the Whitsunday Islands. We knew that it would be a big chunk of the budget, but we were in Australia, and we were driving past Airlie Beach anyway. Whitehaven Beach has the finest sand in the world (so fine that you can use the sand to polish jewellery or exfoliate your skin!). My friend Susie recommended that we contact Rich at Gypsy Travel to see if we could get a good last minute deal for our sailing trip. We booked less than a week before departure, and Rich was able to get us a decent deal on a Wings II sailing. We explained that we definitely didn’t want a super party boat, but still wanted a fun atmosphere. Rich picked out Wings II, and it was the perfect boat for us! There was a good mix of international travellers on our 2D/2N trip, and we all got along quite well.

The highlights included: Whitehaven Beach (obviously ;D) and snorkeling! It was also such a nice break to have our food prepared and dishes washed for us. (Haha, 2 weeks in and chores were already starting to catch up to us.) The sunrises and sunsets were pretty incredible, and sleeping on a boat was like being gently rocked to sleep.

Hiking up the other side to the Whitehaven Beach lookout! We had the good half of the morning to explore and wander along the soft sand. Because of the colour and composition of the sand, it was never too hot to walk barefoot. Exfoliating with the sand! My skin was super soft for days 🙂 Sadly I didn’t have any jewellery to polish, but our shipmates attested to the shine after they polished their silver!
